sel26 : staphylococcal enterotoxin-like superantigen 26 [1]
Staphylococcal enterotoxin-like superantigens are virulence factors that bind to eukaryotic major histocompatibility complex proteins and modulate host immune responses. Typically this involves low-affinity binding to the α-chain of MHC-II for enterotoxins and an additional zinc-dependent high-affinity binding to the β-chain for superantigens. Although phylogenetically similar to the sea family of α-chain-binding enterotoxins, Sel26 is bivalent and capable of crosslinking MHC-II molecules at both α and β chains making it functionally a superantigen. Binding of Sel26 to MHC-II results in down-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNFα, IFN-γ, iNOS) and up-regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10).
