murG : Lipid I N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase [1]

In the first committed membrane-anchored step of peptidoglycan synthesis, MraY transfers cytosolic UDP-N-acetylmuramoyl-pentapeptide to undecaprenyl phosphate to form Lipid I. MurG (alt: undecaprenyl-pyrophosphoryl-N-acetylmuramoylpentapeptide N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase) acts on Lipid I to generate a membrane-anchored disaccharide by transferring the N-acetylglucosamine from UDP-N-acetylglucosamine to the N-acetylmuramic acid component of Lipid I to generate Lipid II.
