mraY : phospho-N-acetylmuramoyl-pentapeptide transferase [1]
After assembly of the cytosolic peptidoglycan precursor UDP-N-acetylmuramoyl-pentapeptide, that substrate needs to be anchored to the inner leaflet of the cell membrane for final modifications as a membrane-bound phospholipid before translocation to the extracellular leaflet. MraY transfers cytosolic phospho-N-acetylmuramoyl-pentapeptide to undecaprenyl phosphate on the inner leaflet of the cell membrane, generating Lipid I (undecaprenyl-pyrophosphoryl-N-acetylmuramoyl-pentapeptide).
