Staphylococci have two copies of rpmG. rpmG1 is next to the gene encoding penicillin binding protein 3 while rpmG2 is next to the gene encoding catalase. Although 90% identical / 94% similar, the two paralogues often differ at positions 30, 35, 37, 39 and 42. Although both forms appear to be functional in ribosomes and found in crystal structures, it appears that only rpmG1 is essential.
