tilS : tRNA cytidine(34) O(2')-lysyltransferase [1]
Several transfer RNAs require modifications to provide maximal fidelity during protein synthesis. TilS (alt: tRNA(Ile)-lysidine synthetase) modifies cytidines at tRNA position 34 with lysine generating 2'-lysylcytidine ("lys2'C"). This modification is only required for the atypical tRNAICAU which shares an anticodon sequence with tRNA-Met. Modification of the anticodon cytidine(34) with lysine alongside TilS-mediated proofreading of isoacceptor stem charging with isoleucine allows this modified isoacceptor-anticodon to recognize the isoleucine codon AUA.
