capC1 : capsular polysaccharide tyrosine-protein phosphatase CapC1 [1]
The capsule regulatory system is not intuitive and has conflicting literature. CapAB forms a bacterial tyrosine kinase (BTY) system that uses a transmembrane stimulatory protein (CapA1) to induce oligomerization of its cognate tyrosine kinase (CapB1) which as an oligomer undergoes autophosphorylation, dissociates from the complex, phosphorylates target enzymes (CapE, CapM, CapO), and activates their catalytic activity. CapC1 can dephosphorylate CapB1 resulting in re-oligomerization or dephosphorylate CapB1 target proteins.
Historically, different capsule types were assigned their own nomenclature (i.e. Cap5C1 and Cap8C1 for the two most prevalent capsule types, CP5 and CP8). The CapC1 protein is 99% identical between Cap5C1 and Cap8C1, provides the same function, and is therefore harmonized as CapC1
