atpI : F0F1 ATP synthase subunit I [1]
ATP synthases couple proton translocation across membranes to rotational energy, conformational change and, ultimately, ATP generation. The F0 portion is a multimeric membrane-embedded proton channel (ab2c10) while the F1 portion is a multimeric cytoplasmic structure (α3β3γδε) that binds ADP and phosphate. When necessary, this process can also be run in reverse to generate a proton gradient at the expense of ATP. AtpI encodes F0 subunit I, a chaperone-like protein that can assist in proper assembly of the F0 C-ring flywheel. However, AtpI is not essential in all systems or under all conditions for proper F0F1 ATPase assembly while some non-staphylococcal organisms also require other specialized chaperones (e.g. AtpZ) or alternative chaperones (e.g. YidC/OxaI/Alb3).
