gpsA : glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase [1]
Staphylococci produce two variants of glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) that catalyze the reversible interconversion between sn-glycerol-3-phosphate (GroP) and dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP). GpsA uses either NADH or NADPH as a reducing cofactor and operates under all conditions whereas GlpD uses reduced menaquinones as its reducing cofactor and only functions during aerobic growth. These enzymes localize to the inner membrane and are critical for multiple cellular processes including phospholipid biosynthesis (through GroP generation), glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, redox homeostasis and electron transport.
