carA : carbamoyl phosphate synthase small subunit [1]
Carbamoyl phosphate synthase condenses ammonia donated from L-glutamate with carbonic acid and ATP to generate the activated carbamate carbamoyl phosphate. This starter unit feeds into several biosynthetic pathways including arginine, urea and pyrimidine synthesis. It is also required for delta toxin production and a carA mutant is avirulent in a C. elegans infection model. The small subunit CarA is technically a glutamine amidotransferase responsible for liberating the ammonia moiety from glutamine and channeling the substrate to the large subunit CarB.
