carB : carbamoyl phosphate synthase large subunit [1]
Carbamoyl phosphate synthase condenses ammonia donated from L-glutamate with carbonic acid and ATP to generate the activated carbamate carbamoyl phosphate. This starter unit feeds into several biosynthetic pathways including arginine, urea and pyrimidine synthesis. It is also required for delta toxin production and a carA mutant is avirulent in a C. elegans infection model. The large subunit CarB is technically an ammonia-carbonic acid ligase-kinase. It uses one ATP to activate carbonic acid as a carbonic acid phosphate, condenses that with ammonia liberated from glutamine by CarA, then phosphorylates the carbamate using a second moiety of ATP.
