Staphylococci have three systems to recycle undecaprenyl-phosphate from the extracellular leaflet of the membrane to the cytoplasm-facing leaflet. After dephosphorylation from undecaprenyl-pyrophosphate to undecaprenyl-phosphate, either polyprenyl-phosphate translocase or undecaprenyl-phosphate translocase can recycle UndP to the inner leaflet. While the relative roles of each system are not fully elucidated, PopT appears to work under alkaline conditions to provide UndP recycling in the absence of a proton motive force. The third undecaprenyl-phosphate recycling system does contribute to UndP turnover but remains unnamed and is less well-characterized than the other two.
