The stringent response alarmones pGpp, ppGpp and pppGpp are synthesized from GTP by rel, relP and relQ. RelP appears to provide a consistent level of basal alarmone production which is degraded by rel's alarmone hydrolase activity. Alarmones allosterically repress alarmone synthesis by RelP. In contrast, RelQ appears to be transcriptionally inducible and alarmones allosterically induce alarmone production resulting in positive-feedback alarmone signal amplification.
