sbi : staphylococcal immune subversion protein Sbi [1]
Staphylococcal immune subversion protein Sbi is a multifactorial immune evasion factor for both the innate and the adaptive immune system. Domain IV is processed and released as a soluble virulence factor (Sbi-IV) that binds complement C3d protein, sequestering it and preventing its activation. Upon interaction with domain III, the Sbi-III-Sbi-IV-C3d complex can activate the alternative complement cascade, resulting in further, futile consumption of soluble C3d protein. The two N-terminal domains of Sbi (Sbi-I and Sbi-II) remain membrane-associated and bind to the Fc regions of IgG analogous to the activity of Protein A, antagonizing opsonization and engulfment. Finally, Sbi is pro-inflammatory and modulates the host cytokine and chemokine response through EGFR signaling.
