Respiratory nitrate reductase (NAR) allows staphylococci to continue electron transport under anaerobic conditions with nitrate as a terminal electron acceptor. The delta subunit acts as a chaperone maintaining the apo alpha subunit in a conformation able to receive its molybdopterin cofactor. It may serve a secondary role as a structural protein that maintains the unstable alpha-beta protein complex in the proper configuration for catalytic activity. Intriguingly, respiratory nitrogen reductase stimulates agr production, increases virulence and decreases the host immune response but only in USA300 staphylococci.
