narI : respiratory nitrate reductase subunit gamma [1]

Respiratory nitrate reductase (NAR) allows staphylococci to continue electron transport under anaerobic conditions with nitrate as a terminal electron acceptor. The gamma subunit acts as a cytochrome b-like protein, transferring electrons from reduced menaquinones, NADH or NADPH to the beta subunit. Intriguingly, respiratory nitrogen reductase stimulates agr production, increases virulence and decreases the host immune response but only in USA300 staphylococci.
