pstS : phosphate-specific ABC transporter substrate-binding subunit [1]
Staphylococcus aureus produces three systems to acquire exogenous inorganic phosphate: PstSCAB, PitA and NtpA. While all three systems provide for inorganic phosphate import and can partially complement for loss of the other two, each has a niche role in phosphate acquisition. The PstSCAB system is highly efficient at scavenging inorganic phosphate from the environment and becomes essential when substrate availability is low.
