phoU (phoU1) : persister formation, virulence factor and phosphate transport regulator PhoU [1]
In Staphylococcus aureus, regulators of inorganic phosphate import systems have taken on additional roles as indirect regulators of persistence and virulence factor expression. PhoU and PitR, the regulators of PstSCAB and PitA, respectively, modulate expression of their respective inorganic phosphate transport systems. However, they moonlight to increase persister cell formation and intracellular bacterial survival (presumably through hyperactive carbon metabolism) and calibrate virulence factor production. Distinctions between the relative contributions of PhoU and PitR may be confounded by the different environmental conditions under which these regulators are activated. PhoU is induced by severe phosphate limitation whereas PitR is induced under modest phosphate limitation in acidic environments.
