Several transfer RNAs require modifications to provide maximal fidelity during protein synthesis. TrmD is a methyltransferase specific for guanosines at tRNA position 37 generating 1-methylguanosine ("m1G" or "K"). Staphylococcal tRNAs requiring this modification include: tRNAH1GUG, tRNAH2GUG, tRNAPUGG, tRNAR3ACG, tRNAL3UAG.
