Bacteria use the second messenger signaling nucleotide cyclic-di-AMP to regulate internal osmotic pressure and maintain balance with both the environment and the cell wall integrity. High cyclic-di-AMP levels induce Cation Proton Antiporter protein A (CpaA) allosterically at its regulator of the conductance of K+ (RCK) C-terminal domain resulting in increased potassium export, reduced intracellular potassium and lower turgor pressure.
