fadB : multifunctional enoyl-CoA beta-oxidation enzyme FadB [1]
• FadB (alt. fatty acid oxidation complex subunit alpha) catalyzes the "second" committed step of fatty acid β-oxidation in four distinct enzymatic reactions: (1) enoyl-CoA isomerase ensures that cis/trans-3-enoyl-CoA are interconverted to trans-2-enoyl-CoA isomers so that (2) enoyl-CoA hydratase (alt. crotonase) can add a water molecule across the 2-3 desaturation, then (3) 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA epimerase can convert the D-3-OH stereoisomer into an L-3-OH stereoisomer so that (4) 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase can generate a thioesterified beta-ketoacid. In short, one enzyme catalyzes four activities converting a 3,4-desaturated fatty acid into a β-ketoacid.
