fadD : long-chain fatty-acid:CoA ligase [1]

• long-chain fatty-acid:CoA ligase (alt. acyl-CoA synthetase, acyl-CoA ligase) sequesters (thioesterifies) free fatty acids onto coenzyme A. Typically FadD acts on long-chain saturated fatty acids for the β-oxidation pathway whereas long-chain unsaturated fatty acids are managed by the fakA phospholipid incorporation pathway.

*** Please note, most annotations have this enzyme misannotated as FadE. It is, in fact, FadD, the acyl:CoA ligase. The gene order in staphylococci is not alphabetical.***
