FmhC binds to FemB to alter assembly of the pentaglycine cross-bridge linking staphylococcal peptidoglycan. This change converts the fifth glycine of the pentaglycine cross-bridge into a serine providing resistance to lysostaphin and similar staphylococcal cell wall hydrolases. Incorporation of serine at position 5, however, does decrease resistance to beta lactam antibiotics.
