forE (yrhD, forE2) : formate oxidoreductase essential subunit [1]
Firmicutes are able to oxidize formate to carbon dioxide and reduce CO2 to bioavailable formate using an atypical molybdopterin-, iron-sulfur cluster- and menaquinone- dependent enzyme. These enzymes are characterized by a catalytic subunit which binds the formyl substrate and an essential subunit that shuttles electrons to or from the menaquinone cofactor. Bacillus encodes two pairs of these recently-discovered enzymes named forCE and forCE2. Staphylococci only contain one version and, unfortunately, they are orthologues of forCE2. Therefore staphylococcal forC and forE are orthologues of Bacillus forC2 and forE2 genes.
