• Staphylococcus aureus encodes two acetolactate decarboxylases. This version, AlsD1, is inducible as part of the CidR regulon and counteracts programmed cell acidification by directing pyruvate carbon flux toward acetoin rather than toward acetic acid via CidC. While the typical nomenclature for this version is "alsD" and the branched chain amino acid biosynthesis paralogue is "budA", we are appending the "1" numeral here for additional clarity due to inconsistent nomenclature use in existing sequenced genomes.
