reoM : regulator of MurA degradation ReoY-binding regulatory phosphoprotein [1]

The ReoMY system regulates ClpCP-mediated degradation of MurA, the enzyme catalyzing the first committed step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis. The Stk1/Stp1 serine-threonine kinase/phosphatase system controls the phosphorylation state of ReoM ; dephosphorylated ReoM binds to both MurA and ReoY. ReoY is a ClpCP-binding adaptor protein that targets ReoM's MurA cargo for proteolysis when ReoM is in the dephosphorylated state. When PG synthesis is required, Stk1 phosphorylates ReoM, MurA no longer binds ReoY, MurA is no longer targeted for proteolysis and the rate of cell wall synthesis increases. The alternative UDP-NAG carboxyvinyltransferase MurZ also plays a currently undefined role in targeting MurA for ClpCP-mediated proteolysis.
