Staphylococci secrete a host immunomodulatory protein, FLIPr, that antagonizes both immune cell chemotaxis receptor FPR2 (formerly FPRL1) and immunoglobulin Fcγ receptors. Although FLIPr sequence variants demonstrate different affinities for FPR and FcγR subclasses, each prevents IgG-mediated opsonophagocytosis, immune cell activation and intracellular killing. Two structural FLIPr variants, one from strain Mu50 and one from strain MW2, have been characterized with distinct affinities for FPR and FcγR subclasses.
