lpgD : lysophosphatidylglycerol phospholipase D [1]
• A crystal structure is available : 8GHI
The staphylococcal phospholipid bilayer consists almost exclusively of phosphatidylglycerol and its derivatives. Staphylococcal phosphatidylglycerol consists of a glycerol molecule decorated with a C16 or longer fatty acid ester at the (1) hydroxyl, an anteiso-pentadecanoate ester at the (2) hydroxyl and a phosphoglycerate phosphoester at the (3) hydroxyl. During phospholipid recycling, the first step is to remove one of the fatty acids. Typically, the C16(+) fatty acid at position (1) is removed by Glycerol Ester Hydrolase resulting in anteiso-pentadecanoyl-lysophosphatidylglycerol (2-(a15)-LPG). However, occasionally the pentadecanoate fatty acid at position (2) is removed resulting in 1-(≥16)-LPG. This alternative 1-(≥16)-LPG degradation product requires further processing to a lysophosphatidic acid by Lysophosphatidylglycerol Phospholipase D removal of glycerol from the phosphoglycerate moiety at the (3) position before it can re-enter the phospholipid recycling pathway.
Note: the anteiso-pentadecanoate is more properly characterized as 12(S)methyltetradecanoate but due to the more common description of "pentadecanoate" in the literature, that is the term used here.
