MurE (alt: UDP-N-acetylmuramoyl-tripeptide synthase) catalyzes the addition of the third amino acid into the growing peptide stem of intracellular UDP-linked N-acetylmuramoyl-ʟ-alanyl-ᴅ-glutamate. Rather than condensing the α-amino group of lysine with the glutamate α-carboxylate in a traditional peptide bond linkage, MurE condenses the lysine α-amino group with the glutamyl-γ-carboxylate resulting in UDP-N-acetylmuramoyl-ʟ-alanyl-γ-ᴅ-glutamyl-ʟ-lysine.
