queF : 7-cyano-7-deazaguanine reductase [1]
QueF is the fourth committed step in the de novo synthesis of the heavily-modified nucleobase queuosine. Its substrate, 7-cyano-7-deazaguanine (preQ0), is provided by the nitrile synthetase QueC. QueF catalyzes a pair of nitrile reductions resulting in conversion to a primary amine, generating 7-aminomethyl-7-deazaguanine (preQ1). This is the form of proto-queuosine that is exchanged with nucleobases and subsequent modifications will occur within nucleotide polymers.
