tarA (tagA) : undecaprenylpyrophosphoryl-N-acetylglucosamine N-acetylmannosaminyltransferase [1]
TarA catalyzes the second step of teichoic acid synthesis, adding a N-acetylmannosamine sugar to undecaprenol-pyrophosphate-linked N-acetylglucosamine monosaccharide. Wall teichoic acids in S. aureus use ribitol excusively as their polyol monomer, therefore WTA enzymes in S. aureus are assigned the "tar" nomenclature. In contrast, S. epidermidis uses glycerol as its polyol monomer so orthologous enzymes in S. epidermidis are assigned the "tag" nomenclature. TarA acts well upstream of teichoic acid ribitol polymerization but by convention retains the "Tar" nomenclature.
