Staphylococci have two general strategies to deal with peroxide stresses. Alkyl hydroperoxide reductases are effective at managing basal peroxide levels produced as side products of normal metabolism. Sudden spikes of peroxides experienced during host infection are more effectively managed by catalases, although AHRs do continue to play a role in managing host-derived oxidative stresses.
