The nomenclature of the malKEFG ATP transport system is inconsistently applied across organisms. By convention, MalK is the ATPase and MalE is the substrate binding protein. However, nomenclature for the ATPase (i.e. MsmK, MsmX) as well as the permease components (i.e. MalC, malD) is not consistently applied in E. coli, B. subtilis, S. pneumoniae and E. faecalis.
