Staphylococci need to be able to recover from coding strand errors that stall transcription machinery. Transcription-repair coupling factor binds stalled RNA polymerase, recruits the UvrA nuclease to the transcription-halting lesion and displaces the stalled polymerase to allow base-excision repair to proceed.
